The season is approaching its final weeks. For Sipho Mbule, this period brings significant uncertainty. His future with the Buccaneers is currently hanging in the balance.

The midfielder’s contract is set to expire at the end of this campaign. While Orlando Pirates hold an option to extend the deal, they have not yet moved to exercise it. According to soccerladuma.co.za, the club has until the end of May to make a final decision.

Lack of Game Time a Major Factor

Selection patterns often tell the full story in professional football. Mbule has struggled for minutes recently. He has not started a single league or cup match in 2026.

This is a stark change from the first half of the season. His early performances were impressive. They even secured him a place in the Bafana Bafana squad for the AFCON in Morocco.

However, things shifted after the tournament. Head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has preferred other options in the midfield. Mbule is now frequently used as a late substitute. He has made 12 league appearances this season and scored one goal.

A Career at a Crossroads

Mbule’s career has lacked stability in recent years. Before joining the Soweto giants, he was with Mamelodi Sundowns FC. He also spent time on loan at Sekhukhune United FC.

Sundowns eventually let him go. Now, he finds himself in a similar position at Pirates. The club is expected to look for new talent for the 2026/27 season. This puts Mbule’s spot in the squad at risk.

An exit after just one campaign is a very real possibility. The next few weeks will determine if he gets another chance or becomes a free agent.
