Calls for the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) are reaching a boiling point. Recent contentious officiating decisions in high-profile matches have intensified the debate among fans, analysts, and administration officials.

Key Incidents Fueling the Debate
- The Sihle Nduli Tackle: During a 1-1 draw between Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC, Sihle Nduli suffered a torn ligament following a lunging tackle by Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya. Ngwenya received a yellow card, but critics argue the severity of the challenge warranted a red card. Nduli faces at least four months on the sidelines.
- AmaZulu’s Disallowed Goal: In the same encounter at Kings Park Stadium, AmaZulu’s Mlondi Mbanjwa had a 34th-minute equalizer ruled out for offside. Replays led observers to question whether the assistant referee made the correct call.
- Zitha Kwinika Challenge: In a 1-1 draw featuring Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns FC, defender Zitha Kwinika was cautioned for catching Tashreeq Matthews with his studs during a clearance attempt. Former referee Victor Hlungwani later stated on SABC Sport that the challenge involved excessive force and deserved a red card.
- Richards Bay vs Polokwane City Confusion: Referee Moreki Lekwape initially awarded a corner kick following a handball appeal, switched to a penalty after consultation via earpiece, and then reversed back to a corner kick. Replays showed the ball struck Malebogo Modise on the body rather than the hand.
Government and SAFA Intervention
The officiating controversy has drawn official attention at the ministerial level. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie confirmed he wrote to the South African Football Association (SAFA) regarding VAR implementation.
McKenzie gave SAFA a 21-day deadline to respond to his demand for the return of funds allocated for bringing VAR technology to South African football. He further indicated that he has escalated the matter to FIFA.
