Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the next round of the Carling Knockout Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso praised his team’s patience and tactical discipline following a tight contest at Loftus Versfeld.
Tactical Patience Breaks the Deadlock
The decisive moment came in the 69th minute. Striker Iqraam Rayners headed home a precise cross from Antonio van Wyk to break the deadlock.
Up until that point, Golden Arrows tested the hosts with a disciplined and compact defensive setup. Speaking after the match to SuperSport, Cardoso highlighted the tactical intensity required to unlock the opposition.
“It was a very tactical match. It had a lot of intensity, with a lot of difficulties to break that defensive structure of Golden Arrows,” Cardoso explained.
He noted that shifting play across the pitch was crucial to finding space. He added that the squad remained focused and stable throughout the encounter.
Looking at the Wider Context
Cup football often demands resilience over pure style. While the scoreline remained modest, Sundowns’ ability to stay patient under pressure demonstrates their operational maturity across knockout competitions.
The remaining quarter-final fixtures feature Kaizer Chiefs against Siwelele, Orlando Pirates hosting Sekhukhune United, and Stellenbosch facing AmaZulu.
Looking ahead, Sundowns shift their attention to continental competition. They face USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup on Sunday, 8 November.
