Professionalism often separates short-term talent from long-term career success. Former winger Steve Lekoelea believes Oswin Appollis provides a clear blueprint for modern players.
The Orlando Pirates attacking star delivered a stellar performance during Bafana Bafana’s 5-0 win against Eritrea in an AFCON qualifier. Appollis registered three assists in the victory, operating under head coach Pitso Mosimane.
Speaking to KickOff, Lekoelea praised the player’s mindset and ability to block out external distractions.
“Every player should behave like Appollis,” Lekoelea stated. “In football, to last longer, you must be coachable; you have to be strong physically and mentally. Appollis is a national star. Yesterday he showed he can play at the highest level.”
Casual Approach Concerns
While Appollis earned high praise, Lekoelea expressed concern regarding the attitude of other squad members. He warned against complacency in international fixtures.
He noted that certain defensive figures appeared too casual during the match. According to Lekoelea, underestimating smaller footballing nations can become a dangerous habit. He emphasized that establishing international respect requires consistent intensity and clinical finishes against every opponent.
Potential Move Abroad
Appollis’s dominant form naturally raises questions about a future transfer overseas. His strong displays for both club and country highlight his readiness for bigger challenges.
Lekoelea acknowledged that any prospective move depends heavily on financial negotiations.
“The way Appollis performed yesterday is special because he is playing locally,” Lekoelea explained. “Is it the right time for him to move overseas? The agreement will be between Orlando Pirates and the player, because in the end everything is determined by money.”
Financial terms often dictate whether international transfers materialise. However, Appollis continues to prove his technical capacity on the major stages.
