New signing Gamphani Lungu made an immediate impression for Orlando Pirates. Coming off the bench, the forward scored the extra-time winner against Durban City Football Club in the MTN8 quarter-finals to secure a semi-final spot.

Lungu joined the Buccaneers during the off-season after an eight-year spell with SuperSport United (who became Siwelele FC last season).

Former coach Kelvin Kaindu, who worked with Lungu at ZANACO and Power Dynamos, shared insights into the player’s journey. According to kickoff.com, Kaindu noted that critics initially doubted Lungu due to his physical stature:

“His body was the issue, but then when he got to the ball, that was when he showed his true qualities, dispelling all doubts about his body.”

Tactical Versatility and Impact

Kaindu highlights Lungu as a complete utility player capable of adapting to various roles on the pitch. His ability to consistently deliver performance in South African football makes him a valuable tactical asset for Pirates.

In recent years, the presence of Zambian stars in South Africa had declined compared to the eras of Dennis Lota or Collins Mbesuma. Lungu’s continued success signals a positive trend for regional talent in the league.
