AFCON Group Results 2024

The 2024 AFCON will be held in January 2024 as Ivory Coast hosts 23 other African countries. Below are the predictions for each group.

African Cup of Nations Results

Group A

Host Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria are the favourites to qualify in this group automatically. However, we expect Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau to put in some fights. One of Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea may make it to the next round as one of the best losers.

Group B

Egypt are a seven-time winner and are the favourite to lead this group. Ghana have also won the tournament four times and are expected to make it to the next round. However, we cannot underestimate Cape Verde and Mozambique since anything can happen in football.

Group C

Group C is another deadly group, and we expect five-time winners Cameroon to battle it out for first place with defending champions Senegal. Guinea also have a track record in the tournament and may pull some surprises.

Group D

Algeria have won the competition twice and should top this group. However, Burkina Faso and Angola may make it difficult for them to have their way. Mauritania will participate in the tournament for the third time and may also pull a surprise.

Group E

Group E is another group to watch out for, with previous winners South Africa and Tunisia battling with Mali and Namibia. We expect a challenging outting for everyone in the group, but Tunisia and South Africa are favourites.

Group F

Zambia, Morocco, and DR Congo have all won AFCON before, which may play out when the 34th edition of the tournament starts. We expect three of them to qualify for the next round, with one making it as one of the best losers.

AFCON Results for South Africa

South Africa once won the competition when they hosted it for the first time in 1996. However, their performance in recent years hasn’t been encouraging. They last participated in the competition in 2019, finishing in the quarterfinals.

They made it out of group D as one of the best losers, following one win and two losses. South Africa would shock everyone in the knockout stage, dumping 2019 host Egypt out of the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory. However, they couldn’t surpass Nigeria in the quarterfinals, losing 2-1.

AFCON Results for South Africa

Check below how South Africa has performed in the AFCON for the past five editions.

Cameroon 2021

The Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the AFCON 2021 held in Cameroon. They finished third in Group C during the qualifying stage behind Ghana and Sudan, who made it to the tournament.

Egypt 2019

As outlined above, South Africa finished in the quarterfinals of the AFCON 2019, falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nigeria. They were quite impressive, having only won one game and lost two in the group stage.

Gabon 2017

South Africa also didn’t qualify for the 2017 AFCON in Gabon. They finished 3rd in Group M during the qualifiers.

Equatorial Guinea 2015

While South Africa secured a place in the AFCON 2015, they didn’t go past the group stage. The Bafana Bafana finished bottom of Group C with only one point following a 1-1 draw with Senegal.

South Africa 2013

The Bafana Bafana performed quite well at AFCON 2013 on home soil, reaching the competition’s quarterfinals. They finished top of Group A with 5 points before losing to Mali 3-1 on penalties in the quarterfinals following a 1-1 draw.

Africa Cup of Nations Results Predictions for 2024

It’s not easy to make predictions for a competition like the AFCON. However, based on previous AFCON results, we estimate that Mohammed Salah’s Egypt is a frontrunner to be the champion. And Senegal’s current team has many players currently competing in top European leagues, which also makes Senegal a contender.
