Head coach Gavin Hunt has provided clarity on the decision. It ultimately came down to match fitness and physical readiness.
The Challenge of Match Conditioning
Mashiane became a free agent after ending his long spell with the Soweto giants. His recent loan period at Siwelele FC yielded minimal game time. He managed just one appearance during that stint.
Hunt highlighted this lack of competitive minutes as the primary obstacle. Speaking at the 2026/27 season launch, the veteran coach noted that the defender had barely played in recent years. Hunt explained that the physical gap was simply too wide to bridge for a team needing instant results.
“He came on and had a trial. But then again, he hadn’t played football again for four years. The four years since I had left there, I don’t think he must have played more than five games,” Hunt stated to goal.com.
Advice for the Road Ahead
The demands of the Premier Soccer League leave little room for extended rehabilitation. Hunt confirmed that Stellenbosch requires players who can contribute right away.
However, the coach offered constructive advice for the 28-year-old. He suggested that Mashiane join a club where he can play regularly, build his physical base, and aim for 30 to 40 games a season.
For Stellenbosch, precision in the transfer market remains essential as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. Meanwhile, Mashiane must find a new destination to rebuild his career and regain match sharpness.
