Tactical discipline and traditional South African flair often seem at war in modern football. At Orlando Pirates, however, a clear balance is emerging under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Speaking ahead of the upcoming Soweto Derby, Bucs captain Nkosinathi Sibisi provided key insight into how the team manages individual expression on the pitch.
Performance First, Entertainment Second
Ouaddou has previously cautioned against prioritizing individual showboating when matches remain in the balance. However, recent convincing victories have changed the picture. After securing comfortable leads, players have been given greater freedom to entertain the supporters.
Sibisi believes this structured freedom suits the squad perfectly.
“We have a young squad. Sometimes they want to express themselves, and they can’t express themselves when the game is normal or 1-1,” Sibisi explained. “So the coach tries and emphasises that you must score a lot of goals, and then you can express yourself as best as possible, because people want to see a show.”
Embracing Individual Strengths
In modern tactical setups, over-regulation can stifle natural talent. Sibisi emphasized that the technical team does not wish to limit creative players who thrive on flair, pointing to teammate Mpho Padime as an example.
According to the skipper, acknowledging individual player profiles is essential:
- Creativity matters: Players with natural flair shouldn’t be forced into purely defensive roles.
- Fan expectations: Supporters turn out in numbers specifically to see entertaining football.
- The condition: Practical results must always precede the spectacle.
“We don’t want to limit players in their full capacity,” Sibisi added. “Sometimes we have to accept that it’s his quality, and we must use that… score your goals, and then you can enjoy after.”
Finding the Right Balance
From an analytical perspective, this approach aligns practical efficiency with cultural identity. By tying flair directly to holding a comfortable lead, Pirates ensure that entertainment never compromises competitive results.
