The famous gold and black jersey of Kaizer Chiefs comes with immense pressure. Many promising young talents struggle under that weight.

However, 20-year-old Luke Baartman is showing he has the composure to handle it.

According to reporting by iol.co.za, the forward has made a powerful start to the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.

He delivered a Man of the Match performance against Kruger United. Shortly after, he scored his first league goal for Amakhosi in a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United FC.

The Early Days and Rise to Prominence

Baartman graduated from the Cape Town Spurs Academy. He made his senior debut at age 17 back in October 2023 against Orlando Pirates.

His sharp finishing and movement quickly caught attention. Ironically, he scored his first Premiership goal against Kaizer Chiefs in November 2023.

Former Spurs coach Sean Connor once compared his playing style to Swedish legend Henrik Larsson. Baartman also represented South Africa at U17 and U20 levels before securing his move to Naturena.

Patience and Adaptation at Naturena

His transition was not immediate. Baartman saw limited playing time under former coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

Instead of getting discouraged, the youngster focused on his physicality. A strong pre-season in Spain impressed new head coach Fernando da Cruz, paving the way for his breakout in 2026.

Da Cruz values Baartman’s versatility across the front line. The coach highlighted the forward’s technical skill, explosiveness, and willingness to learn tactical roles.

Young players often struggle with tactical adaptability when stepping up. Baartman’s early success shows how crucial listening and quick processing are at the top level.
