In football, timing is everything. A single afternoon can change a player’s legacy and a club’s trophy cabinet. Themba Zwane recently proved this by revealing a major “what if” moment in his career.
The Mamelodi Sundowns FC legend shared that Orlando Pirates were very interested in signing him. This happened while he was still playing for Vardos FC in the Vodacom League.
The Chloorkop Pursuit
While Zwane was away with the South Africa Under-23 national team, the Brazilians moved fast. His boss at Vardos, Sinky Mnisi, told him that Sundowns were serious. Interestingly, Mnisi did not mention the interest from the Buccaneers at that time.
Sundowns showed a high level of efficiency in the market. They visited the national team camp specifically to secure his signature. They asked the coach to release Zwane for a few hours.
A Quick Decision
The process was remarkably fast. Zwane describes it as an “in and out” situation. The contract was ready when he arrived at the club’s offices. He signed it immediately without diving into the fine print.
His trust in his representative and his excitement to join a big club drove the deal. It was only later that he discovered Pirates had also been keen to bring him to Soweto.
No Room for Regret
Looking at the history books, the move was a masterstroke. Zwane became one of the most decorated players in the modern era. He won multiple league titles and the CAF Champions League.
The midfielder remains objective about his path. He believes he landed exactly where he was meant to be. His success at Chloorkop has justified the quick decision made years ago.
This story highlights how decisive action from club management can shift the balance of power in the league for over a decade.
