Head coach Pitso Mosimane has named veteran midfielder Themba Zwane in his final Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The 37-year-old selection highlights a long-standing partnership rooted in mutual success and tactical reliability.

A Proven History of Success

Mosimane addressed his selection policy directly, stating that choosing experienced figures requires a clear justification rather than past familiarity. Zwane previously featured under Hugo Broos during South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. However, his deepest club ties remain with Mosimane.

Out of 450 total appearances for Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Zwane played 227 matches under Mosimane’s guidance. Their six seasons together yielded major silverware:

  • 4 Betway Premiership titles
  • 2 Carling Knockout titles
  • 1 CAF Champions League title
  • 1 CAF Super Cup

During their final joint campaign at Sundowns in 2019/20, Zwane earned the PSL Footballer of the Season award.

First International Collaboration

Despite their extensive history at the club level, this call-up marks the first time Mosimane will manage Zwane in the national team setting. Zwane made his international debut in May 2014 under Gordon Igesund, two years after Mosimane’s initial stint with Bafana Bafana ended.

According to reporting by kickoff.com, the statistical reliance on Zwane highlights the specific profile Mosimane seeks for international qualifying matches.
