Orlando Pirates are on the brink of making history as they prepare for the Nedbank Cup final, aiming to secure their third consecutive title in South Africa’s premier knockout competition. The Buccaneers, who have already achieved this feat once before between 1973 and 1975, are determined to replicate their past glory while giving manager José Riveiro a fitting farewell.
Riveiro, who has been with the club for three years, announced his decision to step down at the end of the season. During his tenure, the Spaniard has led Pirates to remarkable success, including three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. Now, the team is focused on adding another trophy to his legacy before his departure. “The joy that José and his support staff have brought to this club will never be forgotten,” said Pirates Chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza.
To reach the final, Orlando Pirates defeated Marumo Gallants by 1–0, with Kabelo Dlamini scoring the only goal of the game. This win sets up the Soweto Derby as Kaizer Chiefs defeated Mamelodi Sundowns by 2-1 with substitute Ashley Du Preez scoring the deciding goal.
The stakes are high for both teams, but Orlando Pirates have an added emotional incentive: giving Riveiro a triumphant send-off. Their experience in high-pressure games and recent success in knockout competitions could give them an edge. However, Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking prowess and solid defense make them formidable opponents.
