Orlando Pirates are gearing up for a major transition following the announcement that head coach José Riveiro will step down at the end of the season. This unexpected development has sent shockwaves through the club and its loyal fanbase, as Riveiro has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence over the past three years.

Riveiro, who joined Pirates in 2022, has enjoyed remarkable success during his tenure, securing five domestic trophies, including three MTN 8 titles and two Nedbank Cups. His tactical acumen and leadership have transformed the Buccaneers into one of South Africa’s most formidable football teams. However, the Spanish coach has decided not to renew his contract, citing personal reasons—chiefly his desire to spend more time with his family back in Spain.

The club’s chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, expressed gratitude for Riveiro’s contributions, stating, “The achievements of the intervening years speak for themselves. The joy that José and his support staff have brought to this Club will never be forgotten”. Pirates now face the daunting task of finding a successor capable of continuing Riveiro’s legacy while steering the club toward new heights.

Several high-profile names have already emerged as potential candidates for the coveted role. Among them is Pitso Mosimane, a seasoned coach with a proven track record in South African football. Mosimane, currently unattached after his stint in Iran, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s finest tacticians and could bring invaluable experience to the Buccaneers.

Another intriguing option is Rulani Mokwena, who is currently managing Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca but faces mounting pressure after recent setbacks. Mokwena’s deep ties to Orlando Pirates—his father and uncle are club legends—make him a sentimental favorite among fans. His familiarity with South African football and history with Mamelodi Sundowns add weight to his candidacy.
