The transfer market is heating up ahead of the 2026/27 season. Reports indicate a major squad reshuffle is underway at the Soweto giants. Thabiso Lebitso is currently edging closer to a departure from the club.

According to a report by thesouthafrican.com, Stellenbosch FC is in advanced talks to sign the versatile 28-year-old right-back.

Injury Woes Alter Pirates Career

Lebitso arrived at the Buccaneers from Chippa United in January 2024. He made an immediate impact. He quickly became a fan favourite after scoring a memorable goal in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

However, his momentum was severely halted by fitness issues. Over his two-and-a-half-year stint, he made fewer than 25 appearances. An injury towards the end of 2025 heavily disrupted his progress. This caused him to lose his place in the starting line-up. He managed only 14 appearances across all competitions last season.

This move represents a classic football narrative. A talented player seeks a fresh start after injuries stall his progress. For Stellenbosch FC, acquiring Lebitso brings proven top-flight experience. He previously made nearly 100 appearances during his time with Chippa United.

A Major Right-Back Overhaul

Lebitso is not the only defender heading for the exit door. Fellow right-back Bandile Shandu is also expected to be released by the club in the coming weeks.

These departures point toward a calculated squad rebuilding strategy. The exits are expected to clear space for new arrivals. Orlando Pirates have already been heavily linked with Bafana Bafana and Polokwane City FC right-back Thabang Matuludi.

In other squad news, midfielder Sipho Mbule is also believed to be a free agent. This comes after the club chose not to renew his contract.
