Selection choices at a major club are always under the microscope. Former Orlando Pirates star Steve Lekoelea has voiced his concerns regarding the current attacking hierarchy.

Lekoelea is dissatisfied with the preference for Yanela Mbuthuma over Evidence Makgopa. He believes experience should be the deciding factor in the starting lineup.

Experience Over Potential

Speaking to KickOff.com, Lekoelea emphasized that Makgopa has spent several years in the PSL. He noted that while Mbuthuma is not a poor player, he still requires further development.

Lekoelea argued that a “major team” cannot afford to wait. He stated that starting Makgopa on the bench is detrimental to the club’s performance. The former playmaker believes the league title will ultimately be decided by goal-scoring ability.

Makgopa’s Current Form

Makgopa is highly regarded for his work rate and ability to hold up play. Despite some criticism regarding his scoring consistency, his statistics remain relevant. He has recorded six goals and three assists in 25 appearances this season.

His tactical value was recently recognized on the international stage. Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos preferred him over Iqraam Rayners for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Makgopa rewarded that trust by scoring in the Last 16 match against Cameroon.

The Road Ahead

Orlando Pirates are looking to find their rhythm after a 1-1 draw against Siwelele FC. The pressure is mounting on coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to find the right clinical edge.

The Buccaneers will face TS Galaxy FC this Sunday at Mbombela Stadium. Whether Ouaddou heeds the advice of club legends remains to be seen.
