The biggest match in South African domestic football is returning to its traditional calendar slot. However, an immediate scheduling conflict awaits local football fans.

According to draft PSL fixtures reported by kickoff.com, the first league edition of the Soweto Derby is scheduled for October 31. Orlando Pirates will serve as the home team for this initial clash against Kaizer Chiefs.

A Return to Tradition

This draft date brings the famous fixture back to its regular settings. This means the first leg happens before Christmas, while the second leg takes place in the New Year.

This sequence has been standard practice for a long time. It occurred in 26 of the 30 seasons played under the PSL era. The only exceptions were the 1996/97, 2020/21, 2024/25, and 2025/26 campaigns. The second derby of the season is set for March 13, 2027.

The CAF Super Cup Conflict

The major talking point of the proposed calendar is the October 31 bottleneck. On that exact same day, Mamelodi Sundowns are scheduled to host USM Alger in the CAF Super Cup. This one-off match will likely take place in Pretoria.

The continental showpiece comes with significant financial incentives. The winner of the match will walk away with USD 500,000 (approximately R8.2 million). The runners-up will receive USD 250,000 (approximately R4.1 million).

Congested Schedule for the Giants

This draft creates a highly demanding period for South African clubs competing on multiple fronts. If both Pirates and Chiefs advance to the second preliminary rounds of their respective CAF competitions, their schedules will intensify heavily.

They would play their continental second-leg matches just one week before the derby. Right after that, they would have to play their Carling Knockout Last 16 fixtures during the midweek. The Soweto Derby would then conclude an incredibly intense block of football.

Furthermore, the second derby installment in March 2027 also sits just one week after the CAF club quarterfinal second legs. Football administrators clearly face a complex task in balancing high-stakes domestic matches with prestigious continental obligations.
