The race for the Betway Premiership title is heating up. Orlando Pirates recently reclaimed the top spot in emphatic fashion. Their 6-0 victory over TS Galaxy FC sent a clear message to the rest of the league.

At the heart of this success is goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

A Historic Milestone in Sight

Chaine is currently performing at an elite level. The weekend victory marked his 15th clean sheet of the league campaign. He is now very close to a long-standing PSL record.

The record for the most clean sheets in a single season is 17. It was set by Moeneeb Josephs during the 2009/10 season. Chaine needs just three more shutouts to equal that mark. Four more would make him the sole record holder.

His consistency has been a pillar for the Buccaneers. In the clean sheet standings, Brandon Petersen of Kaizer Chiefs follows in second place with 11.

According to soccerladuma.co.za, Chaine’s total impact is even wider. He has recorded 24 clean sheets across all competitions this season.

The Bafana Bafana Dilemma

Despite these impressive numbers, international recognition remains elusive. Hugo Broos recently omitted Chaine from the latest Bafana Bafana squad. The national team is preparing for friendlies against Panama ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Broos opted for Renaldo Leaner of Sekhukhune United instead. The coach noted that performance is not just about what happens on the pitch. He emphasized that the national team environment is serious and not a “charity.”

Analysis of the Title Run

Chaine’s situation reflects a common football paradox. A player can dominate domestically but still face hurdles at the international level.

However, this omission could serve as extra motivation. With eight matches remaining, his focus remains on securing silverware. His ability to maintain this defensive discipline will likely decide the fate of the title.
