Career journey: From Durban to Danish royalty

Starting his professional path in KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma’s rise to stardom was rapid. His journey took him from local South African pitches to becoming a cult hero in Europe, before returning home to finish his career as a respected veteran.

Early breakthroughs and European stardom

Zuma began his senior career with African Wanderers, where his prolific scoring record quickly caught the attention of bigger clubs. A move to Orlando Pirates followed, where he cemented his status as a top local talent with an impressive goal return. His performances in the PSL earned him a transfer to FC Copenhagen in 2000, a move that would define his legacy.

In Denmark, Zuma became a club icon. He helped Copenhagen win three Superliga titles and is immortalized by a monument at the Parken Stadium capturing his famous bicycle kick against Brøndby. His time in Scandinavia was the peak of his club career, where he was twice voted into the club’s Hall of Fame and finished 29th in the 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year nominations.

Bundesliga challenge and PSL return

After five successful years in Denmark, Zuma moved to the German Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld. He spent three seasons in Germany, providing key assists and goals to help the club maintain its top-flight status. Although less prolific than in Denmark, his work rate and experience were vital assets against elite European competition.

He returned to South Africa in 2008, signing for Mamelodi Sundowns. After a brief second stint in Denmark with Nordsjælland, he came back to the PSL to play for Vasco da Gama and finally SuperSport United. He retired in 2015, leaving behind a legacy as one of the few South African players to achieve genuine legendary status at a European club.

His international career was marked by his leadership, eventually seeing him wear the captain’s armband at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
