Former Amakhosi shot-stopper William Shongwe shared his perspective on the incident in an interview with kickoff.com.

According to Shongwe, high confidence can sometimes lead to premature decision-making.
“Sometimes when you have become too good at something, you start anticipating a lot what will happen next, and sometimes you get caught,” Shongwe explained.
He noted that Petersen attempted to steal a few steps before the cross came in. While anticipating early can provide an advantage, it carries clear risks. Shongwe believes this moment will remind the goalkeeper to stick strictly to his core principles.
A Matter of Goalkeeper Character
Reflecting on his own playing days, Shongwe recalled taking similar tactical risks. He shared that coach Ted Dumitru used to praise him as a second sweeper for sweeping up through balls early.
However, Shongwe acknowledged that Petersen’s situation turned out poorly due to a well-placed cross that left no recovery time.
Despite the outcome, Shongwe defended the coaching staff. He emphasized that such decisions stem from individual player instinct:
- Brave goalkeepers naturally take calculated risks.
- The choice lies within the player’s personal style.
- The goalkeeper coach should not bear the blame.
