The return of Arthur Sales to full fitness has presented Mamelodi Sundowns FC head coach Miguel Cardoso with a tactical dilemma ahead of Saturday’s MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
According to goal.com, the 24-year-old Brazilian forward has completed three weeks of intensive physical conditioning at Chloorkop. This comes after missing the entire pre-season due to injury.
Sales spoke to the media regarding his return to the squad and the internal competition for places:
“I think it’s a problem for the coach, so I need to do my job. It’s also good for the coach: new players, new skills, different profiles.”
Squad Depth and Tactical Balance
During the forward’s absence, January signings Siyanda Ndlovu and Cassius Mailula established themselves in Cardoso’s attacking system. This shift in dynamics means Sales must fight to regain his spot in the starting lineup.
“I need to, of course, fight every day at training also because I lost a little bit of my space because of my injury. I need to fight again; I think I have this one to do. I just need to show my football, show my talent at training and games, maybe he can use me,” Sales added.
This situation reflects a broader structural reality in modern football management. Having multiple attacking profiles gives a coach flexibility, but altering a functional setup right before a cup final carries inherent risks.
Final Decision for Cardoso
Cardoso must now weigh the match sharpness of his current starting players against the individual talent of Sales. Starting a player who has recently returned from injury presents a tactical risk, yet his finishing abilities remain a valuable asset against high-profile opposition like Orlando Pirates.
Whether Sales features from the start or impacts the game from the bench, his availability strengthens the squad’s overall depth for this title decider.
