The discussion around South African striking talent has surfaced once again following recent comments from former frontman Reason Chiloane.

According to a report by kickoff.com, Chiloane expressed agreement with head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou regarding performance standards after a recent Carling Knockout clash.

First-Half Dominance Followed by Frustration

Orlando Pirates secured a – win against Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena, scoring all three goals before halftime. However, the performance in the second period drew criticism from head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

The Moroccan coach expressed his displeasure after the match:

“If we have to put eight goals against Milford, we have to show Milford that we are not playing at the same level,” said Ouaddou. “I don’t want to let people think that Pirates is only a name… When we wear this shirt with this badge of Pirates, you need to transform yourself in every game.”

Chiloane Points to Deeper Issues in Finishing

Chiloane aligned himself with the head coach’s post-match assessment. He believes the scoreline did not accurately reflect the opportunities created during the game.

  • Missed chances: Chiloane noted that the team should have scored significantly more given their dominance.
  • Striker quality: The former player highlighted a broader concern regarding attacking efficiency in the local game.
  • Grassroots development: He emphasized that finishing struggles stem from fundamental training issues that need attention at earlier developmental stages.

“For a team to just score only three goals out of those chances is disappointing,” Chiloane stated. “It shows we don’t have deadly people who can score even half a chance. The market is dry in South Africa when it comes to strikers, to be honest.”

Looking Ahead to the Soweto Derby

Maintaining consistent intensity remains a key focal point for top-tier squads across competitive fixtures. Tactical discipline and clinical finishing are often the deciding factors in high-stakes encounters.

The technical team will demand a sharper response in their upcoming fixture against rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.
