Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has confirmed the reinstatement of winger Monnapule Saleng to first-team training.
The decision comes after an extended spell away from the squad. Saleng was previously sidelined due to internal disciplinary breaches. These included missing key dates, such as the CAF Champions League final and the pre-season tour in Austria.
Rebuilding Trust Within the Squad
According to FARPost, Cardoso explained that the choice to welcome Saleng back was a collective effort. The management, senior leadership, and club chairman Thlopie Motsepe all agreed to offer the player a clean slate.
“We decided to give ourselves and Saleng an opportunity to move forward in a positive way,” Cardoso noted.
Before returning to group sessions, Saleng completed an individual training program to meet the required professional standards. His attitude during this period satisfied the technical staff.
Cardoso emphasized that mutual trust has been restored between the player and the technical team. He added that while squad competition in attacking areas is high this season, Saleng remains part of his future selection plans across domestic and continental fixtures.
A Measured Approach to Player Management
This situation highlights the balancing act top clubs face between strict discipline and asset management. Mamelodi Sundowns FC recently maintained their strong domestic form with a 4-1 win over Richards Bay FC, featuring a brace from Iqraam Rayners alongside goals from Tashreeq Matthews and Fawaaz Basadien.
Integrating a player of Saleng’s caliber, previously with Orlando Pirates, adds further depth to an already potent attack. Giving talented individuals a structured path back into the fold often yields positive long-term results when managed correctly.
