Miguel Cardoso is setting a new benchmark at Mamelodi Sundowns FC. The Portuguese strategist will soon hit 100 games in charge of the Tshwane giants. He becomes only the second head coach to reach this milestone with the club, alongside legend Pitso Mosimane.
It is a massive achievement for Cardoso. Before his arrival at Chloorkop, he had never completed a full year in his previous five coaching roles, including spells at Esperance, Rio Ave, AEK Athens, Celta Vigo, and Nantes.
According to kickoff.com, his tenure started on December 10, 2024. He won his first match 1-0 against Raja Casablanca five days later. By September 2025, he marked his 50th game against Lamontville Golden Arrows. Now, he stands on the verge of a century.
A Record Built on Consistency
The 54-year-old manager has successfully silenced initial critics through pure consistency. Out of his run across all competitions, Cardoso has earned 63 victories, recorded 22 draws, and suffered just 14 defeats. Two-thirds of his matches have ended in wins.
His domestic dominance is equally impressive. Cardoso remains undefeated at home in the Betway Premiership after 28 host fixtures. His only real setbacks came in local cup shootout losses to Marumo Gallants and Orlando Pirates. Like Mosimane before him, Cardoso has already lifted both the league championship and the CAF Champions League.
Global Stage Awaits
The milestone comes at a historic moment for the team. Sundowns are preparing to host Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahli at Loftus Versfeld in the African-Asian-Pacific Cup.
The stakes could not be higher for Cardoso’s men. A victory on Saturday advances the team to the FIFA Challenger Cup in December against the winner of the Derby of the Americas. The ultimate reward for that pathway is a clash against Paris Saint-Germain in the final.
