Mamelodi Sundowns FC are reportedly open to another loan or permanent departure for Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

According to Hollywoodbets, the 22-year-old forward has been omitted from the club’s pre-season tour squad to Austria. Head coach Miguel Cardoso does not seem to include the player in his plans for the upcoming season.

Impressive World Cup Showing

The decision comes despite Maseko’s recent success on the international stage. He featured for South Africa at the FIFA World Cup 2026, scoring a decisive winning goal against South Korea. That historic strike pushed Bafana Bafana into the knockout stage of the tournament for the very first time.

Frustrations Over Playing Time

Maseko has previously expressed frustration regarding his limited opportunities at the Chloorkop-based side.

  • Joined Sundowns from the now-defunct SuperSport United.
  • Made 45 total appearances for the club.
  • Recorded 3 goals and 1 assist during his tenure.

He spent the second half of last season on loan in Cyprus with AEL Limassol. During that stint, he scored two goals and registered one assist across 15 appearances. His former Cypriot club is reportedly interested in securing his services once again.

In a broader football context, player management often balances short-term tournament form with long-term tactical fit. While international tournaments provide a major stage for individual talent, club managers prioritize specific system profiles during pre-season preparations.
