Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi insists the club has what it takes to defend their Betway Premiership title.
The Buccaneers recently lost star player Relebohile Mofokeng to Belgian Pro League outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Mofokeng won the PSL Footballer of the Season after helping his side secure three domestic trophies.
Despite this major departure, Lekgwathi remains confident in the squad’s overall strength.
Pirates Depend on Squad Depth, Not One Player
Speaking at the season launch, Lekgwathi emphasized that squad harmony and depth will carry the team forward.
“Pirates is not a one-man team,” Lekgwathi stated, noting that the rest of the squad and coaching staff remain intact.
He highlighted the following key factors for the upcoming season:
- Minimal Roster Disruption: The club kept almost the entire squad together, ensuring continuity.
- New Additions: New signings have been brought in to handle a demanding schedule across multiple competitions.
- Youth Integration: Promoting talent from the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) provides fresh energy and internal competition.
Lekgwathi acknowledged that defending the crown will not be easy. Every opponent will be eager to beat the champions. However, he believes squad rotation and high competition for places will keep the team sharp.
The Buccaneers kick off their title defense against newly promoted Milford FC this Saturday.
