Pre-season is a crucial period for football clubs to build momentum, but it also carries the risk of untimely setbacks. Kaizer Chiefs have experienced this firsthand as they begin their preparations for the 2026/27 campaign in Spain without a key young talent.

According to a report by soccerladuma.co.za, promising midfielder Thulani Mabaso has been ruled out of the travelling squad due to a long-term injury.

Extended Sidelining for Midfield Prospect

The 22-year-old midfielder was reportedly unable to join his teammates on the plane due to the severity of his condition. While the exact nature of the injury remains undisclosed, club sources indicate that Mabaso will be out for a while.

This setback comes at a highly unfortunate time for the player. Mabaso previously captained the club’s DStv Diski Challenge team before earning a promotion to the senior squad. He made three Betway Premiership appearances last season. Many expected him to fight for regular first-team opportunities under the guidance of new head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

Injuries to rising stars are always a delicate matter for technical teams. They disrupt tactical planning and halt individual development. For the latest updates on squad preparations and football analysis, check out our predictions section.

Defensive Omission in the Squad

Mabaso is not the only young player missing out on the European tour. Central defender Xolani Cossa has also been omitted from the travelling party.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Botswana side Black Lions, where he captained the team. Despite signing a new contract extension keeping him with the club until June 2028, reports indicate Cossa did not travel because he is currently not being integrated into the senior squad setup.

Managing a large squad during pre-season requires tough decisions regarding which players to prioritize for first-team preparation. soccerladuma.co.za reached out to Kaizer Chiefs for official comments on Mabaso’s fitness status, but the club had not responded at the time of publication.
