Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart is on the verge of a landmark move to Europe. Sources have confirmed that he is close to signing with Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried. The 29-year-old midfielder, who has been notably absent during the Amakhosi’s preseason preparations, is set to become the latest South African footballer to test himself on the European stage.

Maart’s absence from the Chiefs’ squad, currently in the Netherlands for their preseason camp, has not gone unnoticed. While the rest of the team has been preparing for the new campaign, Maart has remained in South Africa. Reportedly, he was finalising the details of his transfer. Insiders reveal that both Kaizer Chiefs and SV Ried have reached an agreement. The only thing remaining is the issuance of a work visa.

SV Ried Win the Race

Although there was interest from other European clubs, SV Ried have emerged as the frontrunners for Maart’s signature. The Austrian club, newly promoted to the Bundesliga, is building a strong South African contingent. With former Stellenbosch FC winger Antonio van Wyk already on their books. The addition of  Maartis is a major coup for SV Ried. They are eager to bolster their midfield ahead of a challenging season opener against RB Salzburg.

Since joining Kaizer Chiefs from Sekhukhune United in 2022, Maart has been a pivotal figure for the Soweto giants. Appointed captain, he led by example both on and off the pitch. Over three seasons, Maart made 95 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Chiefs to their first silverware in a decade. He famously netted a late winner in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.

Maart’s move to Austria is not just a personal milestone but a testament to the growing reputation of South African talent abroad. With SV Ried eager to integrate him into their squad, Maart wants to make an immediate impact in the Austrian Bundesliga. Chiefs fans will undoubtedly miss their captain, but his European journey is a source of pride for the club and the nation.

This is the first major transfer out of Amokashi this season, after a number of high-profile signings already announced to help the club for the upcoming season.
