Jose Riveiro, the outgoing Orlando Pirates coach, is set to make a high-profile move to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he is poised to become the highest-paid coach in Africa. After confirming he would not renew his contract with the Pirates, Riveiro requested an early release, which the South African club granted following their final Premier Soccer League game against Golden Arrows.

Riveiro’s tenure at Orlando Pirates was marked by significant success, including winning five trophies and pushing the team to contend strongly in the league. His tactical acumen earned him respect across African football, highlighted by his Pirates side defeating Al Ahly in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League group stage. This success has paved the way for his lucrative new deal.

Al Ahly has reportedly offered Riveiro a two-year contract with an option for a third year, featuring a monthly salary of $135,000 (approximately R2.4 million), which includes the wages of his foreign assistants. This totals about $1.62 million annually, making him the continent’s best-paid coach by a significant margin. Additionally, the contract includes performance bonuses such as a three-month salary bonus for winning the CAF Champions League and one month’s salary for any other title.

There is speculation that Riveiro could join Al Ahly in time to lead the team at the upcoming Club World Cup, a prestigious tournament where the Egyptian club will compete on the global stage. This would mark a swift transition from his role at Pirates to the helm of one of Africa’s most storied clubs.

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza expressed respect for Riveiro’s decision and acknowledged the mutual benefits during his tenure, despite the disappointment of not having a formal farewell due to the timing of his departure.
