Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has expressed his delight following the return of defender Rushwin Dortley. The Bafana Bafana international completed a full 90 minutes during the team’s 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy FC in the Carling Knockout Last 16 at FNB Stadium.

Dortley endured a nightmare 19-month injury layoff due to a severe knee injury that required two separate operations. His long road to recovery saw him miss 64 consecutive matches since his last appearance in March 2025.

Despite the extended absence, the centre-back proved crucial in the tactical build-up, playing a key role in the move that led directly to Amakhosi’s third goal.

According to a report by kickoff.com, Da Cruz praised the technical capabilities of the left-footed defender after the match.

“Dortley has technical quality; he sees good space, he breaks the line to play the space,” Da Cruz remarked. “He is a very good header, and he is a player we need for a long time.”

The French manager also acknowledged the emotional weight of the comeback, highlighting Dortley’s hard work during his recovery process.

This cup victory secures a place in the quarterfinals for Kaizer Chiefs, offering a timely competitive boost to the squad. However, securing a regular starting spot will require navigating a highly competitive defensive department alongside teammates such as Inacio Miguel, Thabo Moloisane, and Zitha Kwinika.

Dortley will now look to build on this momentum as the squad prepares for the upcoming Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.
