Mamelodi Sundowns FC missed a vital opportunity to take control of the Betway Premiership. A goalless draw against Richards Bay on Sunday left coach Miguel Cardoso deeply frustrated.

The stalemate at uMhlathuze Stadium came at a critical time. Earlier, Orlando Pirates had dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs. A victory for the Brazilians would have moved them to the top of the table.

The Title Race Numbers

Sundowns currently sit on 58 points. They remain just one point behind the Buccaneers. Crucially, the Tshwane giants still have a game in hand.

There are only five matches remaining in this season’s campaign. Coach Cardoso labeled the missed opportunity as “dramatic.” He admitted he was only informed of the Pirates result after his own match concluded.

Cardoso Calls for Perfection

The Brazilians have now dropped four points in their last two league outings. This follows a recent draw against Stellenbosch FC. This dip in form comes after a dominant run of 10 consecutive victories.

Cardoso was blunt about his team’s current trajectory. He stated that this level of performance will not secure the championship. He believes the team now needs five victories from their final five matches.

The coach also expressed dissatisfaction with the playing conditions. He described the pitch as slow, dry, and high. He suggested these factors favored the home side’s defensive tactics.

Looking Ahead

The path to a ninth successive league title remains challenging. Sundowns face a busy schedule to close the season:

  • Back-to-back fixtures against Polokwane City.
  • A major clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
  • Final games against Siwelele FC and TS Galaxy.

The title race was also impacted by the Soweto derby. In that match, Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen performed heroics to ensure Pirates dropped points. This set the stage for Sundowns, but they were unable to capitalize.
