Sunderland AFC are intensifying their recruitment drive as they edge closer to a long-awaited return to the Premier League. Currently sitting fourth in the Championship with 76 points and four games remaining, Sunderland have already secured a playoff spot, fueling optimism among fans that top-flight football could soon return to the Stadium of Light.

In their quest to bolster the squad for the rigors of the Premier League, Sunderland have set their sights on two standout performers from South African giants Orlando Pirates: midfielder Thalente Mbatha and striker Tshegofatso Mabasa. Initially, Sunderland scouts were dispatched to monitor Mbatha, whose dynamic displays in midfield have made him a key figure for the Buccaneers. However, their attention quickly expanded to include Mabasa, whose goal-scoring exploits have been impossible to ignore.

Mbatha, 24, has enjoyed a breakthrough season since making his loan move from SuperSport United permanent in July 2024. He has featured in 34 matches across all competitions, contributing four goals and an assist. His performances have not only solidified his place in the Pirates’ starting eleven but also earned him regular call-ups to the South African national team.

While Mbatha was the original focus, Sunderland’s scouts were equally impressed by Tshegofatso Mabasa. The 28-year-old striker has been in prolific form, netting 13 goals in 38 appearances this season and finishing as the South African top-flight’s leading scorer last term with 16 goals. Mabasa’s recent hat-trick propelled him to second on Orlando Pirates’ all-time PSL-era scoring chart, with 44 goals to his name. His physical presence, clinical finishing, and experience could provide Sunderland with the firepower needed to compete in the Premier League.

The potential double swoop signals a shift in Sunderland’s transfer strategy, which has traditionally favored younger, unproven talent. The club’s recent struggles with inexperience have prompted a recognition of the value of seasoned professionals, especially as they prepare for the challenges of top-tier football.
