Bafana Bafana vice-captain, Percy Tau, has officially become a free agent following the conclusion of his short-term contract with Qatar SC. The 31-year-old South African attacker’s stint in the Middle East comes to an end after a challenging six months. It opens the door for a potential high-profile move as the transfer window heats up.
Tau joined Qatar SC in January 2025 after leaving Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he had enjoyed a trophy-laden spell. The move was an opportunity for Tau to revive his club career after injuries and limited game time. It even resulted in him losing his place in the national team. Qatar SC reportedly paid around R8 million for his services. It involved an initial six-month contract and an option to extend if he impressed.
However, Tau’s time in the Qatar Stars League proved challenging. He featured in 11 matches across all competitions, starting nine league games. But he failed to find the back of the net, registering just two assists. Qatar SC struggled as a team, finishing 10th in the 12-team league and narrowly avoiding relegation. The club failed to win any of their last seven league matches. Tau’s solitary appearance in the Qatar-UAE Super Cup also ended without a goal or assist.

Despite the recent dip in form, Tau’s pedigree is unquestionable. He boasts an impressive CV. He won multiple league titles and two CAF Champions League trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. Tau was also named CAF Interclub Player of the Year in 2023 and has 52 caps and 16 goals for South Africa, making him one of the best players to don the Bafana Bafana shirt. His versatility allows him to play across the front line, making him an attractive prospect for many clubs.
As a free agent, Tau is now one of the most sought-after names in African football. Egyptian giants Zamalek have already been linked with a move. Reports indicate he is on their shortlist for the upcoming transfer window.
Back in South Africa, a return to Mamelodi Sundowns or a move to Kaizer Chiefs could be on the cards. Both clubs are in need of attacking reinforcements and could benefit from his signing.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and next year’s Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, Tau will be eager to secure regular football. If he wants to get back to the national team, regular playtime should be the first thing on his mind.
