Electric playing style

Tau operates best as an inverted winger or a false nine, using his low center of gravity to disrupt organized defenses.

  • Explosive acceleration: Capable of bursting past full-backs from a standing start to create immediate overload situations.
  • 🧠 Spatial intelligence: Excel at dropping into pockets of space between the midfield and defensive lines to link play.
  • 🪄 Technical dribbling: Uses close control and body feints to navigate tight areas, often cutting inside onto his stronger left foot.
  • 🎯 Final ball delivery: Balances his goal-scoring threat with the vision to thread through-balls for overlapping runners.
  • 🛡️ High-pressing energy: relentless work rate off the ball, often initiating the press high up the pitch to force turnovers.

Professional career

From the dusty streets of Witbank to the grand stages of the Club World Cup, Tau’s journey has been defined by resilience and silverware. His path has taken him through South Africa, Belgium, England, Egypt, Qatar, and now Southeast Asia.

Rise at Sundowns and European loans

Tau became a household name at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he was instrumental in their 2016 CAF Champions League triumph. His dazzling form in the 2017/18 season earned him the PSL Footballer of the Season award. This success secured a move to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, though work permit issues immediately led to a series of loan spells in Belgium.

In Belgium, he proved his quality across three different clubs. He was named Player of the Season in the second tier with Union SG before winning the league title with Club Brugge. His time at Anderlecht further solidified his reputation in Europe, eventually earning him a recall to Brighton, where he made a handful of Premier League appearances before seeking regular football elsewhere.

Dominance at Al Ahly and move to Asia

In 2021, Tau reunited with coach Pitso Mosimane at Egyptian giants Al Ahly. He became a fan favorite in Cairo, helping the Red Devils win two CAF Champions League titles and multiple domestic trophies. Despite struggling with injuries at times, his goal contribution rate remained high, and he became the first South African to be named CAF Interclub Player of the Year in 2023.

After a brief six-month stint with Qatar SC in early 2025, Tau made a surprising move to Vietnamese champions Nam Dinh in August 2025. He joined forces with fellow South African Njabulo Blom, adding star power to the V.League 1. This move marked a new chapter, seeing him compete in the AFC Champions League Two and bringing his experience to a rapidly developing football market.

AFCON glory and global stages

Percy Tau has been the talisman for Bafana Bafana for nearly a decade, representing his country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. His crowning achievement came at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast, where he helped South Africa secure a bronze medal. Despite the pressure of being the team’s focal point, his leadership and experience were vital in guiding a largely locally-based squad to the semi-finals.

Beyond the continent, Tau has showcased his talent at the FIFA Club World Cup with both Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. He notably scored against world-class opposition on this global stage, cementing his status as a big-game player. His international career is marked by over 50 caps and a goal return that places him among his nation’s all-time top scorers.
