The Premier Soccer League recently revealed the final shortlist for the 2026 PSL Awards. However, the absence of one major name has sparked a heated nationwide debate.
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Ronwen Williams was left out of the Goalkeeper of the Season category. Former South Africa goalkeeping coach Alex Heredia has led the calls of disbelief. He labelled the decision to leave out the national team’s number one as completely nonsensical.
Heredia Questions Selection Criteria
The final three nominees for the award include Sipho Chaine from Orlando Pirates, Ricardo Goss from SuperSport United, and Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen.
Speaking to the media about the shock omission, Heredia did not hold back his thoughts on the selection process.
“I don’t know who is choosing the goalkeepers, but Ronwen currently is the best, and if we talk goalkeeping, his name should be there amongst the nominees,” Heredia stated, as reported bygoal.com. “It’s ridiculous.”
Heredia acknowledged that some players earned their spots through hard work. However, he strongly questioned how Petersen made the final cut ahead of Williams.
The veteran coach noted that Petersen is not a regular and only had a few good games. In contrast, he praised Chaine for performing consistently for the past three years.
A Look At The Other Nominees
Heredia offered a balanced view of the other players selected. He pointed out that while Ricardo Goss played for a weaker side that struggled for results, his individual contributions remained very good throughout the season.
Even so, Heredia maintains that the list lacks credibility without the Bafana Bafana captain. When asked how he would have structured the final shortlist, he insisted he would remove either Goss or Petersen to make room for Williams.
