The future of former Kaizer Chiefs defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has become a subject of intense speculation. Despite moving to Libya just last year, the Botswana national team captain could soon find himself back in the Betway Premiership.

Surplus to Requirements in Libya

Ditlhokwe joined the 18-time Libyan champions, Al-Ittihad, in February. His current contract is set to run until June 2027. Since his arrival, the 27-year-old has made 15 appearances and scored one goal.

However, the situation has changed rapidly. According to Foot Africa, the club’s hierarchy and head coach Khaled Ben Yahia are reportedly unimpressed with his performances. As a result, Ditlhokwe has been deemed surplus to requirements alongside teammates Mohamed Zrida and Yawo Agbagno.

PSL Interest and Financial Hurdles

This development has caught the attention of several South African clubs. Both Siwelele FC and Marumo Gallants are reportedly monitoring the defender’s situation closely. They are not alone, as Egyptian side Ceramica Cleopatra is also interested.

From an analytical perspective, a move back to South Africa makes sense for the player’s visibility. However, personal terms may prove to be a significant roadblock. Ditlhokwe is currently on a substantial financial package in Libya. Matching these wages could be a challenge for interested local suitors.

The Wider Context

Ditlhokwe’s situation highlights the volatile nature of North African football for Southern African players. While the moves offer high financial rewards, the performance expectations are immediate and rigid. For Ditlhokwe, the next transfer window will be crucial for his career stability.
