Thabo September Secures CAF A License and Rules Out PSL Return

Last Updated on

Chippa United

Thabo September is moving in a different direction. The former Chippa United coach has officially secured his CAF A license. This qualification is a major milestone for any coach in Africa. However, September has no interest in returning to the Premier Soccer League.

He recently spoke about his journey. The process took 32 days across four phases. While most coaches use this license to climb the professional ladder, September has other plans. He wants to focus on grassroots football.

Analysis and Context

This move is quite rare in the modern game. Usually, high-level coaching qualifications lead straight to the top flight. Most ambitious managers dream of leading elite teams like Mamelodi Sundowns FC. September is prioritizing talent identification and development instead.

He currently owns Komani United in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League. By staying away from the PSL, he avoids the high pressure of top-tier management. He aims to build a sustainable pipeline for South African talent. He hopes to unearth future stars who can reach the level of players like Ronwen Williams or Teboho Mokoena.

A Different Path

September previously turned down an assistant role with the “Chilli Boys.” He prefers to manage his own targets. He also runs a foundation to give back to the community.

“I don’t want to be in the space of PSL,” September told soccerladuma.co.za. He believes he can help other coaches and young players more effectively at the lower levels. He wants to set realistic targets and focus on his foundation.

This highlights a growing trend of former players looking to fix the foundations of the game. September’s choice shows that a CAF A license is not just a ticket to the big leagues. It is also a tool for community development.
