The South African football landscape is often defined by the fierce rivalry between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. Usually, this battle happens on the pitch. However, a recent revelation by coach Vela Khumalo shows that the fight for talent can be even more dramatic behind the scenes.

The “Hide Under the Bed” Tactic

Speaking to kickoff.com, Khumalo detailed the unorthodox methods used to secure the signature of Puso Dithejane in 2021. At just 17, Dithejane was one of the most sought-after prospects in the country following a standout performance for the national under-17 team.

While Mamelodi Sundowns arrived at the Transnet School of Excellence to finalize a deal, the young forward had other ideas. He reached out to Khumalo, expressing his desire to play for the Glamour Boys instead.

Khumalo’s advice was simple yet desperate: “Hide under the bed.” The coach literally rushed to the school to pick up the player while Sundowns representatives were on-site. Khumalo described the move as a matter of “survival” in a highly competitive market.

A Short-Lived Stay at Naturena

Despite the high-stakes recruitment, Dithejane’s time at Naturena did not go as planned. He never made the expected breakthrough into the first team. His exit from the club was sparked by a controversial incident where he allegedly refused to serve as a ball boy.

The player has since moved on, eventually landing at TS Galaxy before his recent move to Chicago Fire in the MLS. At 21, the star is ready for a global stage, proving that while the “hide and seek” drama got him to Chiefs, his talent is what ultimately took him abroad.

Analysis: The Price of Recruitment

This story highlights the immense pressure local coaches face to secure top-tier youth talent. In the PSL, losing a player to a rival isn’t just a sporting loss; it’s a blow to the club’s future identity.

While the methods were unconventional, they demonstrate the lengths clubs will go to for a competitive edge. For more insights into local talent movements, check out the latest news at Bettors South Africa.
