Mamelodi Sundowns’ prolific striker Lucas Ribeiro edges closer to a sensational move to Egyptian giants Pyramids. Ribeiro has become the primary target for Pyramids following a significant shake-up in the North African transfer market.

Fresh from winning the CAF Champions League, they have sanctioned the sale of their talismanic winger Ibrahim Adel to UAE Pro League outfit Al Jazira for a reported $5million. Adel’s departure has put pressure on the club to find suitable reinforcements. Ribeiro’s name has emerged at the very top of their wishlist.

Lucas Ribeiro’s impact at Mamelodi Sundowns since his arrival has been nothing short of remarkable. The 26-year-old Brazilian forward has become integral to the club’s attacking prowess. He boasts a record of 36 goals and 20 assists in just 77 appearances for the Pretoria-based side over two seasons. In the recently concluded campaign alone, Ribeiro struck 20 goals and laid on 11 assists across all competitions. Underlining his clinical edge and creative flair.

Renowned for his electric pace, dribbling skills, and lethal finishing, Ribeiro has not only delivered domestically but also shone on the continental stage. His dazzling solo goal against Borussia Dortmund at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup was named the goal of the tournament.

The Stakes for Sundowns

Ribeiro’s looming exit could deal a heavy blow to Sundowns’ ambitions, both in the DStv Premiership and in Africa. His ability to conjure goals from half-chances and his influential presence in the dressing room make him a lynchpin for the reigning South African champions. Losing a player who averages nearly a goal every other game and has adapted seamlessly to the demands of African football would force Sundowns to rethink their attacking strategy.

Club officials are reportedly holding firm in negotiations. They insist on a transfer fee of around R52million (about €2.5million), aware that Ribeiro’s talent and consistent performances place him among the most valuable assets currently in the South African league. Yet, the allure of playing for Pyramids, Africa’s current champion, might prove too tempting for Ribeiro to ignore.

Sundowns fans will be hoping the Brazilian sensation stays at Chloorkop. However, with Pyramids’s intent clear and financial muscle to match, South African football could soon witness one of its brightest stars heading north for a new challenge in Cairo, leaving a gap that will be hard to fill.
