Stellenbosch FC’s standout defender Fawaaz Basadien has made a firm decision to remain with the Cape Winelands club, despite strong interest from two of South Africa’s biggest football giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. The 28-year-old left-back, who has been pivotal for Stellenbosch since joining in 2022, recently signed a new long-term contract, signalling his commitment to the Maroons and their ambitions.
Basadien’s loyalty to Stellenbosch comes amid persistent transfer rumours linking him to Chiefs and Sundowns, both keen to bolster their defensive ranks. Kaizer Chiefs, in particular, have been actively pursuing the South African international, with an initial offer rejected by Stellenbosch last season and talks continuing into 2025. Chiefs are reportedly looking to strengthen their left-back position after some underwhelming performances from recent signings, making Basadien their prime target.
Despite the allure of playing for bigger clubs, Basadien has expressed his focus on contributing to Stellenbosch’s success. He acknowledges the dream of moving to a top club but emphasises his current priority is helping Stellenbosch reach new heights, including pushing for continental competition success like the CAF Confederation Cup.
His recent performances have been impressive. This season alone, Basadien has scored seven goals and made seven assists across all competitions in 43 appearances, a notable increase compared to his previous season.
Since his arrival from Moroka Swallows in 2022, Basadien has become a key figure in Stellenbosch’s lineup, playing a significant role in the club’s historic Carling Black Label Cup triumph in 2023. His versatility and defensive solidity have earned him a call-up to the South African national team, further highlighting his rising profile in domestic football.
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has been clear about the club’s stance, stating they are not willing to part with Basadien, who is considered a “fantastic player” and vital to the squad’s progress. The club recently improved his contract to secure his services and maintain squad stability as they aim to build on last season’s strong performances.
