Veteran South African defender Siyanda Xulu is poised to write a new chapter in his football journey, with reports confirming he is on the verge of joining a second division club in India. This move comes at a pivotal moment in Xulu’s career, as the 33-year-old aims to reignite his professional prospects after a period away from the spotlight.

Born in Durban in 1991, Xulu’s footballing path began in the Kaizer Chiefs academy before he was released in 2009. He quickly bounced back by joining Mamelodi Sundowns, where his performances earned him trials with European giants Barcelona and Arsenal in 2010. Although those trials did not result in contracts, Xulu’s talent was undeniable, and he soon signed with Russian Premier League side FC Rostov in 2012. During his stint in Russia, he lifted the Russian Cup in the 2013–14 season.

After returning to South Africa and playing for clubs like Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United, Xulu took his talents abroad again, joining Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel and later Turan Tovuz in Azerbaijan. Most recently, he signed a two-year deal with SuperSport United in 2023, but has since become a free agent, exploring opportunities beyond South Africa’s borders.

Now, with interest from a second division Indian club, Xulu sees a chance to revive his career and bring his experience to a growing football market. This move is significant, as Indian football continues to attract international talent, offering both competitive action and a platform for seasoned professionals to make an impact.

For Xulu, the switch to India represents more than just a fresh start. At 33, he brings a wealth of experience from top leagues in Africa, Europe, and Asia, as well as over 30 caps for the South African national team, including a stint as captain during the 2018 COSAFA Cup. The Indian second division may not match the prestige of his previous clubs, but it provides regular playing time and a leadership role crucial for a player eager to extend his career.
