History of Vincent Pule

Continuing our series on the best soccer players in South Africa, our focus is on Maliele Vincent Pule.

Born in Bloemfontein, Free State, on the 10th of March 1992, little is documented about Pule’s path into the beautiful game other than him playing on QwaQwa’s dusty streets. However, clearly, his talent was spotted throughout his school years as he was later snapped up by African Warriors F.C.

Vincent Pule in South Africa

Vincent Pule, who has earned the nickname ‘Shuffle’, has played for three clubs in South Africa (to date). Here’s a breakdown of his career.

African Warriors

Pule first appeared on the scene when he joined African Warriors F.C. – a club based in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State. During his debut season in 2012-2013, when the Warriors were playing in the National First Division (the second tier in the South African football pyramid), Pule made 17 appearances. He scored twice that season and picked up three yellow cards.

Having established himself in the Warriors’ starting XI, Vincent Pule made 26 appearances the following season. He was also more productive in front of goals, scoring on 7 occasions.

Bidvest Wits

Having garnered a reputation as a free-kick specialist, Pule was spotted by South Africa Premier League club Bidvest Wits. Having signed for Bidvest for an undisclosed fee, Pule’s career stagnated somewhat for a few years.

In his first season with Bidvest Wits (2014-2015), he made 8 appearances – scoring 2 goals, and in the following year, we only saw him five times, and he failed to register a single goal.

Not to be disheartened, Pule continued with Bidvest and he made 6 appearances in the 2016-2017 season when the club won the South Africa Premier League title, the League Cup, and the 8 Cup. Having rediscovered his form, he appeared 22 times the following season, scoring 3 times.

Orlando Pirates

After 4 seasons with Bidvest Wits, Pule joined Orlando Pirates on the 1st of July 2018. His first season with the club was his best yet, as he found the back of the net 8 times in 26 appearances. The Pirates went on to win the Black Label Cup that season, which was his first piece of silverware with his new team.

Pule remained a key part of Orlando’s frontline, making another 51 appearances over the next two seasons, with 9 goals to his name. This brings us to the current 2021 – 2022 season. Vincent Pule is still a Pirates player. This is his fourth season, so it remains to be seen if he will continue with this club or look for a move abroad.

Vincent Pule International Career

He has not played overseas at club level. However, he has made three appearances for the South Africa senior team.

Two of these came in qualification matches for the Africa Cup of Nations, and the other in an international friendly versus Paraguay. He has also been an unused substitute for Qatar 2022 World Cup qualification matches.

Here’s a summary of the playing career of the player.
