Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly put a hold on contract discussions with Sibongiseni Mthethwa. The midfielder, affectionately known as “Ox,” sees his current deal at Naturena expire in June 2026.

Mthethwa joined the Glamour Boys from Stellenbosch in September 2023. Since then, his journey in Soweto has been a mix of highs and lows. He was once on the fringes of Bafana Bafana selection. However, he also faced reports of being transfer-listed after initially struggling for game time.

Why Amakhosi Are Delaying Mthethwa’s New Deal

His fortunes changed during the 2024/25 season. Midfield injuries gave him a lifeline, and he quickly became a first-choice player. This campaign, he made 18 appearances before suffering a serious injury that will likely sideline him for the remainder of the season.

According to Soccer Laduma, Amakhosi management has decided to pause negotiations until the end of the campaign. The club is in no rush to finalize the situation because they hold a one-year option on his current contract.

This move reflects a strategic and cautious approach. While Mthethwa remains in the club’s long-term plans, his recovery timeline is a significant factor. By waiting until the season ends, the club can better assess his fitness before committing to new terms.

Managing veteran players often requires this balance of loyalty and pragmatism. Chiefs are reportedly using a similar strategy with other players whose contracts are ending soon at Naturena.

The 31-year-old is now focused on his recovery. His future at the club seems secure in principle, but the formal paperwork will wait until the medical team provides more clarity. This patience allows the club to protect its interests while keeping a key asset in the fold.
