Former Chelsea and Ivory Coast forward Salomon Kalou wants Kaizer Chiefs to secure the Betway Premiership title next season. Kalou, who grew up supporting Amakhosi, is currently in South Africa working as a World Cup analyst for SuperSport TV.

His support for the club goes beyond personal fandom. Kalou believes that a more balanced domestic league will ultimately strengthen the South African national team.

Boosting PSL Competition

Orlando Pirates claimed the league title last season. This victory ended a dominant run by Mamelodi Sundowns FC, who had won eight consecutive league crowns.

Players from both Pirates and Sundowns made up the core of Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad. This squad recently achieved a historic milestone by reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.

According to a report by citizen.co.za, Kalou emphasized the importance of variety at the top of the table. He stated that having different champions, including a potential rise from teams like Stellenbosch FC, makes the league more exciting. Better domestic competition prepares local players for the demands of international football.

Reflecting on Bafana’s World Cup Campaign

Kalou also shared his analysis of South Africa’s recent World Cup performances. Bafana Bafana suffered an opening 2-0 defeat against Mexico but improved with a 1-1 draw against Czechia. They secured their knockout spot with a 1-0 win over South Korea.

The team was eventually eliminated by Canada in the round of 32. Kalou noted that the performance was strong, but the players failed to convert their opportunities. He observed that Canada capitalized on their late chance to seal the match.
