The return of Ricardo Goss to Mamelodi Sundowns FC is set to reshape the club’s goalkeeping department.
According to reports from soccerladuma.co.za, Goss has returned to Chloorkop following a loan spell at Siwelele FC. The club reportedly intends to keep the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper for the upcoming campaign. He is expected to serve as an understudy to the undisputed number one, Ronwen Williams.
This decision introduces a highly competitive dynamic to the squad. While maintaining elite depth is essential for top clubs, it inevitably leaves other quality players with very limited minutes.
The Impact on Jody February
At 30 years old, Jody February is currently the youngest goalkeeper in the Sundowns first team. Although he recently signed a contract renewal, his prospects of getting regular playing time look slim.
Williams is currently 34. While Sundowns are planning for the future, Williams remains the clear leader of the pack. With both Williams and Goss capable of playing at the highest level for several more seasons, February faces a massive hurdle.
Last season, February was the only first-team goalkeeper at Sundowns who did not make an official appearance in the PSL. Meanwhile, Williams, Denis Onyango, and Reyaad Pieterse all saw game time.
