The financial landscape of South African football is becoming clearer. The FIFA Global Transfer Report 2025 has shed light on how much PSL clubs are investing in talent.

The figures show that South Africa is maintaining a strong position in the continental market. In 2025, local clubs spent USD 3.31 million (approximately R52 million) on international arrivals.

A Profitable Market: Exporting Talent Pays Off

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs remain the primary drivers of this spending. Both clubs have earned spots in the top 10 spending clubs in CAF. The Brazilians currently rank ninth, while Amakhosi sit in tenth.

Sundowns’ investment included bringing in Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos. They also committed significant funds to finalize the transfer of Brayan Leon from Colombia.

Kaizer Chiefs were equally active. They spent millions to secure Nkanyiso Shinga from Portugal. These moves reflect a growing trend of PSL giants looking toward Europe and South America for reinforcements.

However, the league is also proving to be a profitable “export” market. PSL clubs received a total of USD 5.16 million (approx. R81 million) in transfer fees. This represents a massive 47.7% increase from the previous year.

Key departures fueled this growth. Orlando Pirates saw Mohau Nkota move to the Saudi Pro League for a significant fee. Mbekezeli Mbokazi also left on a big-money deal. Kaizer Chiefs also boosted their coffers through the sale of Yusuf Maart to Austria.

The report highlights a high volume of movement. There were 66 incoming transfers compared to 130 outgoing transfers. This data suggests that while South African clubs are buying quality, they are also becoming more effective at selling talent to international leagues.

According to kickoff.com, these figures highlight the evolving economic power of the local top flight.
