History of Luther Singh

Luther Wesley Singh is a South African football player born in Soweto. He began his football career in the Swedish second division club GAIS in 2015.

This move came after stellar performances in the Stars of Africa football academy, which he joined when he was 11. At 16, he went to Brazil, where he trained with Vasco da Gama and Fluminense.

South Africa Under-20

Singh started playing for the South African team from the Under-20 level. He participated in the COSAFA Under-20 Championships in 2016 and scored in the group stage match where they trumped Lesotho in an 8-0 win.

The team went on to win all the group stage matches. Singh scored a hat-trick in the semi-final as South Africa won 5-0 against Angola.

In the finals, Singh played a major role, providing an assist for the team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss against Zambia. Due to his goal-scoring prowess, he won the tournament’s, Golden Boot.

Following his limited success at the COSAFA Championships, Singh was part of the team that participated in the 2017 edition of the Under-20 African Cup of Nations.

He didn’t disappoint as he scored a hat-trick in the opening game against Cameroon. The team progressed through the group stage and quarter-finals but were eliminated in the semi-final match against Zambia. Nevertheless, Singh still won the Golden Boot of the tournament.

He scored 9 goals in 13 matches for the Under-20 team. He was one of the best soccer players in South Africa for that under-20 team.

Bafana Bafana

In March 2018, Singh was invited to play with the South African National team, Bafana Bafana. He made his debut on 28th March 2018 in a 0-0 draw against Angola.

He scored his first goals for the national team in the 2018 COSAFA Championships against Botswana and Uganda in the group stage matches.

Besides, he has scored 3 goals in 9 appearances for Bafana Bafana.

GAIS

In his first season at GAIS in 2015, he scored 2 goals in 8 matches. Unfortunately, after his first match, the season was marred with injuries. But things turned around in 2016 after he moved from a winger to a central forward position.

In the same season, he scored his first professional hat-trick in a 7-0 win over Angelhom. He ended the season with 8 goals in 22 appearances.

Braga

At the expiration of his 2-year contract at GAIS, Singh moved to the Portuguese side Braga in the winter transfer window.

At Braga, due to lack of playing time with the first team, he played with the club’s reserve team in the Portuguese LigaPro, which is the second division in the Portuguese football hierarchy. He scored his first goal for the side in a 5-0 win over Vizela.

He stayed at Braga for 1 and a half seasons, scoring 14 goals in 52 matches.

Chaves (Loan)

In the winter transfer window for the 2019/2020 season, Singh joined a Primera side Chaves on loan and made his debut on 3rd January in a 0-0 draw against Feirense. It wasn’t long before he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 win over Tondela.

But he couldn’t improve his chances so much at the club, netting just two goals in 17 matches. Things got worse as the club was relegated at the end of the season and he had to return to Braga at the end of the season.

Moreirense (Loan)

After returning to his parent club from Chaves, he went on another season-long loan to the Primera side Moreirense. Unfortunately, he didn’t also find his form with Moreirense, as he only managed 3 goals in 21 appearances.

As a result, he returned to his parent club at the end of the season.

Pacos de Ferreira (Loan)

He left again for Pacos de Ferreira on a season-long loan on 21 September 2020. This was his third loan move in 3 years. This was to get regular first-team action in the top league. He fared better on this loan move, finding the back of the net 5 times in 29 matches.

But the club wasn’t moved to make his move permanent, so he returned to Braga at the end of the season.

FC Copenhagen

In the summer transfer window, the Danish side signed Singh for an undisclosed fee from Braga on the 18th of August 2021. His debut came a few days later as he came in as a substitute in a league match against SønderjyskE, which was a 2-0 win.

As a halftime substitute, he was also featured in the UEFA Europa League match against POAK. Unfortunately, he had an abysmal performance in the match and is yet to find his feet as he is yet to score any goal as of the time of this writing.
