History of Lebo Mothiba
Lebo Mothiba, regarded as one of the best soccer players in South Africa, was born on 23 January 1996 in Johannesburg. He played youth football with local club Mamelodi Sundowns but never progressed to the first team. He played for a while with Diambers Academy before signing with French club Lille.
As well as playing for the Lille first team he was also sent on loan to Valenciennes before earning a €4 million move to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. In his first season, he helped the club win the Coupe de la Ligue, starting the penalty shoot-out victory in the final over Guingamp. At the beginning of 2022, he joined Troyes on loan until the end of the season.
Lebo Mothiba in South Africa
Although he spent his formative years at Premier Soccer League club Mamelodi Sundowns, he didn’t go on to play for the first team and is yet to play a single professional game in his home country. He joined the Lille youth set up in France in 2017 and has played entirely in that country in his club career so far.
Lebo Mothiba International Career
Lebo Mothiba has played for a number of French clubs and has impressed everywhere he has gone so far.
Valenciennes
Lebo Mothiba began his professional career at Lille in France’s Ligue 1 but was almost immediately sent out on loan to second-tier side Valenciennes. He did so well in the second half of the season that the club extended the loan period for another campaign.
Lille
Even though he started the next season impressively, he was recalled to Lille, who were struggling against relegation. His five goals in 14 games – including two on the last day of the season – helped the club stay up. Even though he was playing well, Mothiba was sold to Strasbourg just after the start of the 2018/19 season, as Lille struggled with financial problems.
Strasbourg and Troyes
Lebo Mothiba started his time at Strasbourg well, scoring his first goal in only his second appearance for the club. He won the Coupe de Ligue title in that first season, scoring 12 goals in 39 games in all competitions.
Although he played regularly the next season, he hardly featured at all for Strasbourg in the 2020/2021 season and made the move to Troyes on loan in January 2022 until the end of the season.
South Africa
After playing for South Africa at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Mothiba made the move up to the national team in 2018. He then went on to become the first player to score in three consecutive matches for South Africa from his debut.
