Orlando Pirates remain active as the September 22 transfer deadline quickly approaches. Despite early squad overhaul under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the club could still strengthen its defensive line to handle a demanding season.
The right-back position is a clear priority area. Recent departures have significantly reduced defensive cover:
- Deano van Rooyen moved to rivals Mamelodi Sundowns FC.
- Thabiso Lebitso joined Stellenbosch FC.
- Siyabonga Ndlozi signed for Sekhukhune United.
- Tshepho Mashiloane went out on loan to Sekhukhune.
Currently, 24-year-old Kamogelo Sebelebele is playing at right-back. However, he is an attacking player rather than a natural defender.
Heavy Schedule Demands Squad Depth
Squad depth is crucial for Ezimnyama. Pirates are fighting on multiple fronts, including the Betway Premiership, domestic cup competitions, and the CAF Champions League group stage qualifiers. They have already secured a place in the MTN8 final.
Injury issues have already put pressure on the squad. Key players like captain Nkosinathi Sibisi and midfielder Thalente Mbatha have faced fitness setbacks alongside Andre de Jong, Evidence Makgopa, Sihle Nduli, Masindi Nemtajela, Kabelo Dlamini, and Gamphani Lungu. Meanwhile, Tshepang Moremi has only just returned to action.
Is Thabang Matuludi the Solution?
Polokwane City right-back Thabang Matuludi remains a potential target. The 27-year-old was part of the recent Bafana Bafana FIFA World Cup squad and offers valuable domestic experience.
Matuludi has not featured for Polokwane City yet this season. While Rise and Shine coach Willy Maloto insists the player remains in his plans, his absence from matchday squads fuels ongoing transfer speculation.
With two weeks left before the window shuts, adding proven experience to balance out a fixture-congested campaign makes strategic sense. Whether Pirates move for Matuludi or another target, late activity remains very possible.
