Orlando Pirates have officially completed the signing of attacking midfielder Andre De Jong from Stellenbosch FC. The New Zealand international joins the club after the Buccaneers previously failed to secure him in the last window.

This move strengthens a squad currently leading the Premier Soccer League table. However, it also creates intense competition for established stars like Sipho Mbule and Patrick Maswanganyi.

Competition for Places

The arrival of De Jong adds significant depth to the midfield. Former Pirates star Andries Sebola shared his analysis with Sowetan Live. He noted that Maswanganyi’s form has been inconsistent lately.

Sebola also pointed out that Mbule lacks the stamina to finish full matches. In his view, De Jong’s ability to play as a second striker makes him a vital acquisition for the title race. You can keep up with the latest team developments in our sports news section.

Bafana Bafana Implications

The timing of this transfer is critical. Both Mbule and Maswanganyi are fighting for spots in the national team under Hugo Broos.

With Themba Zwane sidelined, Broos has identified these two as potential playmakers for Bafana Bafana. However, if De Jong limits their minutes at the club level, their positions for the 2026 FIFA World Cup could be at risk.

According to reports from Goal.com, Broos remains hopeful about Mbule’s qualities. Yet, the coach has admitted it is difficult to find a permanent replacement for Zwane’s specific skill set.

Looking Ahead

Pirates entered the 2025 AFCON break with a two-point lead over Mamelodi Sundowns. The challenge now is regaining rhythm.

Many players were active during the tournament in Morocco. Sebola fears the transition back to competitive club football may take time. The added depth provided by De Jong might be the insurance the Buccaneers need to maintain their title challenge.
