The 2026 World Cup saw Argentina face widespread opposition, culminating in their defeat to Spain in the tournament’s final; a result that Lisandro Martínez deems undeserved.
The former Ajax defender shared his frustrations in an interview with Olé, addressing critics: “I have mixed feelings about it. It bothers me because this level of hatred is completely unwarranted. I witnessed my teammates fight relentlessly on the pitch, and our supporters made us feel as if we were playing at home. People accuse us of arrogance, but I believe that says more about them than about us. We have always treated our opponents with great respect.”
Martínez continued, highlighting their conduct towards Spain after the final: “We congratulated all the players and technical staff from Spain.” Addressing accusations of disrespect during the medal ceremony, Martínez clarified: “If it appeared that we turned our backs on them, it was only because we were facing our fans, who never stopped supporting us. That moment was, in fact, a tribute to our loyal supporters.”
Currently a Manchester United defender, Martínez expressed gratitude for the journey: “I was fortunate to win the 2022 World Cup, and although we didn’t succeed this time, we accomplished plenty. We achieved through unity, respect, and by showcasing to the world what it means to be Argentinian. We elevated Argentina to the pinnacle.”
Earlier, Rodrigo de Paul was also in the air with a message for ‘his people’: “If anyone deserved to relive the emotion of four years ago, it was all of you.”
Inter Miami’s midfielder further expressed: “But as the hours pass, I’m realising more and more that the bond you all share with this group goes far beyond just a trophy. That thought is what keeps me grounded during this challenging time.”
He also had strong words regarding all the so-called ‘Argentina haters’: “Today, I see how many people were eagerly waiting for this defeat. Throughout the World Cup, they spread baseless conspiracy theories to mask their own frustration, simply because they couldn’t experience the joy we Argentinians lived through.”
De Paul took his message even further: “Our smiles bother them. Our way of being annoys them. But it’s exactly because of this that we’ve reinforced the belief that our passion and love for this jersey can conquer anything.”
